Pike County, located in the great state of Indiana, was established on December 21, 1816. Named after the famous American explorer and soldier Zebulon Pike, the county has a rich history rooted in agriculture and coal mining. Petersburg, founded in 1818, serves as the county seat, while the county itself is part of the evansville metropolitan area.

Pike County played a role in the Underground Railroad, with many citizens using their homes to provide shelter to escaping slaves on their journey to freedom. Local churches were also instrumental in supporting anti-slavery efforts.

A fun fact about Pike County is that it is home to the Patoka River National Wildlife Refuge, a protected area established in 1994. The wildlife refuge covers over 4,000 acres and provides a habitat for a variety of plants and animals, including numerous endangered species. Visitors to the refuge can enjoy recreational activities such as birdwatching, fishing, hunting, and photography, all while taking in the natural beauty of southern Indiana.
