Putnam County is located in the west-central part of the great state of Indiana, USA. Established on April 1, 1822, the county was named in honor of General Israel Putnam, an American Revolutionary War hero. Its county seat is Greencastle, which was founded in 1821 by Ephraim Dukes.

Prior to the arrival of European settlers, the region was home to various Native American tribes, predominantly the Miami and Potawatomi. In the early 19th century, settlers of European descent began to arrive, attracted by the fertile soil and opportunities for agriculture.

Throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries, several railroads were constructed through Putnam County, contributing to its growth and prosperity. The first line was completed in 1849, and additional rail lines were added over time, with the Monon line being the most famous railroad in Indiana. This made the county a hub of transportation, agriculture, and industry.

Today, Putnam County has a rich and diverse economy, including a strong agricultural sector, manufacturing, and educational facilities, such as DePauw University, which was established in Greencastle in 1837.

Fun Fact: Putnam County is home to nine historic covered bridges, which were mainly constructed during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. These bridges have become tourist attractions, symbolizing the rural charm and history of the region.
