Shelby County, located in the great state of Indiana, is a region steeped in rich history. The county was officially established on April 1, 1822, and it was named after the Revolutionary War hero General Isaac Shelby, the first governor of Kentucky. Covering an area of about 414 square miles, Shelby County is part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area.

In terms of its historical background, Shelby County has always been a predominantly agricultural region with corn and soybeans as the primary crops. The first settlement in the county was named Freeport and was established by a group of settlers from South Carolina in 1818. The growth of the area was rather slow until the construction of railroads in the mid-1800s accelerated development and attracted more migrants to the region.

The county seat of Shelbyville, established in 1822, also holds significant historical value. The city has been home to various notable residents over the years, including Thomas Hendricks, the 21st Vice President of the United States, and Charles Major, a widely-read novelist in the early 20th century.

One interesting fun fact about Shelby County pertains to the city of Shelbyville: Not only is it considered the birthplace of the famous high-wheel bike, known as the penny-farthing, but it also hosted the first professional basketball game in that state in 1902. The game took place at the local YMCA building and marked a significant milestone in the history of sports in Indiana.

In summary, Shelby County is a culturally and historically rich region with an agricultural background, famous residents, and significant contributions to the world of cycling and basketball.
