Spencer County, located in the great state of Indiana, was established on February 1, 1818. It is named in honor of Captain Spier Spencer, who heroically fought and died in the Battle of Tippecanoe during the War of 1812. Covering approximately 401 square miles, the county is situated along the southern border of the state, adjacent to the Ohio River. The county seat, Rockport, was selected in 1818 and is situated along the river's scenic shores.

Originally inhabited by various Native American tribes, the lands in Spencer County attracted European settlers primarily of German and Irish descent during the early 1800s. As the area developed, its economy relied heavily on agriculture, with corn, soybean, and wheat farming being major contributors. Coal mining became another important industry in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

A noteworthy fun fact about Spencer County is that it is known as the birthplace and childhood home of the 16th President of the United States, Abraham Lincoln. Lincoln lived in a small log cabin on a farm near present-day Lincoln City, Indiana, from the age of 7 until he was 21. Today, the county is home to the Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial, which preserves the original site where the Lincoln family lived and commemorates the time Lincoln spent in Indiana, a period that significantly shaped both his character and his worldviews.
