Sullivan County, a rural region in southwestern Indiana, was officially established in 1817, about six years after Indiana achieved statehood. The county was named in honor of Daniel Sullivan, a Revolutionary War hero. It quickly developed as an agricultural hub thanks to its fertile soil and flat landscape that provided easy access.

In the mid-19th century, the county saw the growth of the coal mining industry, which attracted a large influx of immigrants, particularly from Europe. Throughout the following years, coal mining remained the main economic driver of the area. However, the industry began to decline in the 20th century.

Notably, Sullivan County is home to the Shakamak State Park, which was established in 1929. With picturesque landscapes, a wide array of outdoor recreational activities, and three lakes for fishing and boating, the park has become a favorite destination for locals and visitors alike.

One fun fact about Sullivan County is the annual "Bass Tournament" taking place at Shakamak State Park. The tournament, organized by the Sullivan County Park & Lake Board, has been a tradition for several years, showcasing the area's warm community spirit and love for nature.
