Switzerland County, located in the state of Indiana, was established on October 1, 1814. It was named after the home country of many of the early settlers who had emigrated from Switzerland. The county seat is the charming riverside town of Vevay, which was founded in 1802 by Swiss immigrants under the leadership of John James Dufour.

An important fact about Switzerland County and Vevay is their influence on the early American winemaking industry, making it a historically significant wine region. In the early 1800s, Vevay emerged as the first successful commercial winemaking enterprise in the United States. The Swiss settlers, who possessed winemaking expertise and experience, planted vineyards and began production in 1806. By the 1850s, over 25 wineries were operating in Switzerland County, earning the town of Vevay the moniker, "The Birthplace of American Wine."
