Union County is a small rural county located in the southeastern part of Indiana, USA. It was officially established on January 15, 1821, and has a rich history spanning over two centuries. Initially inhabited by Native American tribes like the Miami and the Shawnee, the region witnessed an influx of European-American settlers in the early 1800s, particularly after the Treaty of St. Mary's in 1818.

The county was named "Union" due to the convergence of several communities and the unity of the citizens in the area. Liberty, the county seat, was platted in 1817 and has remained the administrative center for Union County to date. Agriculture played a significant role in the growth of the county, with residents primarily engaged in farming, livestock raising, and crop production.

During the 19th century, Union County experienced a modest increase in population, with several small towns and villages such as Brownsville, Billingsville, Clifton, and Kitchel emerging. The region remained predominantly agricultural, although small industries such as mills and factories began to take root.

One fun fact about Union County, Indiana, is the "Big Smoky Valley Mound" located northeast of the town of Kitchel. This historic mound is believed to have been built by the prehistoric Adena culture anywhere between 1000 BC to 500 AD, making it a fascinating site for those interested in history and archaeology.
