Vermillion County, located in the western part of the great state of Indiana, was officially established on January 2, 1824. It was named after the Vermillion River, which flows through the county and eventually joins the Wabash River. The county seat, Newport, was established the same year. The region was primarily settled by European immigrants, including a significant number of French-Canadian settlers, who arrived in the early 1800s to take advantage of the fertile land and trade opportunities provided by the river.

Various industries played essential roles in the growth and development of Vermillion County. Coal mining was one of the primary industries during the 19th and early 20th centuries, with numerous mines operating in the area. Agriculture also prospered, with farmers cultivating crops like corn, wheat, and hay. The county's rich soil made it an ideal location for farming, which remains an important industry in the region today.

The construction of the Wabash and Erie Canal, which passed through Vermillion County, was another significant factor in the county's growth. The canal, completed in 1853, opened up several economic opportunities for the region's residents, including trade and transportation.

A fun fact about Vermillion County is that it is home to the Newport Hill Climb, a unique and historic auto racing event started in 1909. The annual event attracts thousands of visitors and features vintage and classic vehicles competing in timed races up a steep hill, a nod to the early days of automobile innovation and testing. The Hill Climb is now an automotive festival, offering food, live music, and family-friendly activities, alongside the central event of the racing competition.
