Vigo County is located in the western part of the great state of Indiana, and was established in 1818. It is named in honor of Colonel Francis Vigo, an Italian fur trader who provided significant support to the American colonies during the Revolutionary War. The county seat, Terre Haute, which means "high land" in French, was chosen due to its strategic position on the eastern bank of the Wabash River.

Historically, the area has long been occupied by various Indigenous tribes such as the Miami, Wea, and Kickapoo before European-American settlers arrived in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The Wabash River played a key role in the region's development, as it facilitated transportation and trade. In the mid-19th century, the National Road (which is now U.S. Highway 40) was built through the county, further spurring growth and development.

During the early 20th century, Terre Haute became known as the "Crossroads of America" due to the intersection of several highways and railroads that passed through the city. Its position as a transportation hub attracted industry and businesses, fostering the area's economic growth.

A fun fact about Vigo County is that it has a long history of being a "bellwether" county in presidential elections. From 1956 until 2020, the county has correctly predicted the winner of the presidential race in every election save for one. In 2020, Vigo County favored the losing candidate in a closely contested race, which broke the bellwether streak. Nonetheless, the county's historically accurate voting record still makes it noteworthy in the world of politics.
