Chautauqua County, located in the great state of Kansas, was established on June 1, 1875. The county was named after Chautauqua County in New York, home to many of the early settlers in the region. Chautauqua County in Kansas spans an area of approximately 649 square miles and is situated in the southeastern corner of the state, bordering Oklahoma.

Before the arrival of European settlers, the area was inhabited primarily by the Osage Native American tribe. During the 1800s, European settlers began moving into the region, attracted by the rich agricultural land and the opening of Kansas Territory for settlement. Growth in Chautauqua County accelerated with the expansion of the cattle industry and the arrival of the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway, which opened new markets for farm products and contributed to the development of towns in the region.

The county seat of Chautauqua County is Sedan, which was founded in 1871 and incorporated as a city in 1875. Sedan has a rich history tied to the oil industry, with oil wells discovered in the early 1900s, leading to rapid growth and development throughout the county. The population of Chautauqua County reached its peak in the 1920s with over 15,000 residents, but has since declined to roughly 3,400 people as of the 2020 census.

A fun fact about Chautauqua County is that it was once home to notable rodeo star and Wild West performer, Emmett Dalton. Born in 1871, he was part of the infamous Dalton Gang, a group of outlaws who operated in the late 19th century. After serving time in prison, Emmett retired from crime, moved back to Chautauqua County, and became a successful author and actor in Hollywood.
