Cowley County, located in the great state of Kansas, was originally established on February 27, 1867. Named after Kansas clergyman and journalist Matthew Cowley, this county was mainly inhabited by Native American tribes such as the Osage before European settlement. The Walnut River and Arkansas River run through the county, which provided an ideal location for settlers due to the fertile land and accessibility to resources.

Early in its history, Cowley County experienced rapid growth and development, partially attributed to the arrival of the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway, as well as the Kansas City, Lawrence & Southern Railway in the 1870s. These railroad connections helped to promote the agricultural industry in the region, which remains an important aspect of the local economy today. The county seat, Winfield, was established as a town in 1873, and has been an administrative hub for the county ever since.

Cowley County is home to several ghost towns that were once thriving with activity, including the town of Tisdale. At its peak, Tisdale was known for its limestone quarries and production of high-quality building stone. As the demand for limestone decreased, the town slowly declined and eventually ceased to exist.

A fun fact about Cowley County is that it is home to the Kansas Vietnam Veterans Memorial, located in Arkansas City. This memorial honors the 777 servicemen and women from Kansas who lost their lives during the Vietnam War, and serves as an important reminder of their sacrifices in the pursuit of defending their nation.
