Decatur County is located in the great state of Kansas, and was established on December 20, 1879. The county was named in honor of Stephen Decatur, a naval hero from the War of 1812 and the Barbary Wars. It is situated in the northwestern region of Kansas, covering an area of 894 square miles. The county seat, Oberlin, was established in 1878 and became an incorporated city in 1885.

Decatur County has experienced a rich history dating back to its early settlement days. The Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854 influenced the settlement of the area as it allowed for the establishment of the Kansas Territory, which attracted settlers from various parts of the United States. Decatur County's location near the Missouri Pacific Railroad line further enhanced its expansion as the railroad facilitated trade and travel for the growing community.

One of the significant historical events in Decatur County is the famous Last Indian Raid, which took place in 1878.
