Dickinson County, located in the great state of Kansas, was founded on February 20, 1857. It was named in honor of Daniel S. Dickinson, a U.S. Senator from New York. The county is situated in the Central Plains region of Kansas and covers an area of approximately 852 square miles. The county seat is Abilene, which was established along the Kansas Pacific (now Union Pacific) Railroad in 1857.

In its early history, Dickinson County was primarily inhabited by the Kansa and Pawnee Native American tribes. European settlers, predominantly of English, Irish, and German descent, began to arrive in the 1850s and 1860s. Agriculture, specifically wheat production, played a crucial role in the county's development, and by the late 19th century, Dickinson County became a significant player in the United States' wheat market.

One historical fun fact about Dickinson County is its connection with President Dwight D. Eisenhower. President Eisenhower was born on October 14, 1890, in Denison, Texas, but his family moved to Abilene when he was a toddler. Abilene is now the location of the Eisenhower Presidential Library, Museum, and Boyhood Home, a major tourist attraction that celebrates the 34th President's life and achievements.
