Edwards County is situated in the central part of Kansas and was established on March 7, 1874. The county was named in honor of John H. Edwards, a Union soldier who served as a sergeant during the American Civil War. Edwards played a significant role in establishing the Kansas Pacific Railway, which helped to stimulate economic growth and paved the way for settlers to build communities in the region.

The area originally attracted settlers due to the promise of fertile lands ripe for agricultural development. The first Europeans to settle in the region were primarily German and Russian immigrants who arrived in the 1870s. Kinsley, officially established in 1873, was selected as the county seat and remains so to this day.

Agriculture has historically been the lifeblood of Edwards County, playing a significant role in its growth and development. With the arrival of railroads and advancements in irrigation technology, the region became a hub for raising cattle and cultivating crops such as wheat, alfalfa, and corn.

One fun fact about Edwards County is that Kinsley, the county seat, is known as the "Midway USA," as it is precisely 1,561 miles away from both San Francisco and New York City alike. This unique geographical distinction has made Kinsley a major tourist attraction for people traveling across the United States.
