Elk County is a rural county located in the southeastern part of the great state of Kansas. The county was established on February 26, 1867, and was named after the Elk River, which runs through the area. Its county seat is Howard, and the largest city is Moline. Elk County has a rich history based primarily on agriculture, oil, and natural gas industries.

The land that makes up Elk County was initially Native American territory, with tribes such as the Osage Indians residing in the region. In the early 1800s, European settlers, predominantly from the eastern United States, began to migrate to the area.

The arrival of the Eastern Kansas Railroad in the 1870s spurred growth and development in the region, with towns such as Elk Falls, Grenola, and Moline growing rapidly. These settlements supported agriculture, and throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Elk County produced large amounts of corn, wheat, and cattle.

In addition to agriculture, the region also experienced an oil and natural gas boom during the early 20th century, with the first oil well in the county being drilled in 1902. The oil and natural gas industries in Elk County played a significant role in the development of towns like Longton and Elk Falls.

A fun fact about Elk County is that it is home to Elk Falls, a small city that is considered the World's Largest Living Ghost Town. The city is also famous for its annual Outhouse Tour & Contest in November, where residents and visitors compete for the most creatively designed outhouses, celebrating the town's rural heritage.
