Ellis County, in the great state of Kansas, was officially established on February 26, 1867. The county was named in honor of George Ellis, who was an influential Kansas State Senator during that period. Ellis County is principally located in the western part of the state and has an estimated population of around 28,000 residents.

The history of the region can be traced back to the indigenous tribes that inhabited the area, such as the Kiowa, the Arapaho, and the Comanche, who lived and hunted in the region for centuries. In the 19th century, as European settlers began to move westward, the area that would become Ellis County was explored by early pioneers like Zebulon Pike and Jedediah Smith, whose expeditions helped map out the region's geography and resources.

The arrival of the railroad in 1872, specifically the Kansas Pacific Railway, spurred the growth and development of Ellis County. This led to the establishment of the county's two major towns, Hays and Ellis. Over time, Hays became the largest city and the county seat, serving as an important hub for both transportation and commerce in the region.

Agriculture is a key driver of the economy in Ellis County, with wheat being the primary crop. The area also has a robust cattle and meatpacking industry, which significantly contributes to the local economy.

One fun fact about this region of the USA is that Ellis County is home to Fort Hays State University, which was established in 1902. The university is built on the grounds of a historic U.S. military post, Fort Hays, which played a vital role in the defense and settlement of the American West during the late 19th century. The university's Sternberg Museum of Natural History is a significant attraction in the area, which houses an extensive collection of fossils, including the famous "fish-within-a-fish" fossil.
