Ellsworth County, located in the great state of Kansas, has a rich historical background. It was officially established on February 26, 1867, and named after Fort Ellsworth, a military outpost along the Smoky Hill River, which was further named in honor of 2nd Lieutenant Allen Ellsworth of the 7th Iowa Cavalry. The county is situated in the central part of Kansas and covers an area of approximately 720 square miles.

In the early days, Ellsworth County witnessed significant Native American presence, specifically the Kansa, or Kaw, and the Cheyenne tribes. European settlers began arriving in the mid-1800s, predominantly drawn to the region due to the expansion of the railroad and the Homestead Act of 1862.

The 1870s brought rapid growth to the area, with the establishment of the Kansas Pacific Railroad and the cattle trade. Ellsworth became a vital shipping point for Texas cattle and evolved into a bustling cowtown filled with saloons and dance halls. However, by the late 1870s, the cattle trade declined, and the town began to stabilize with a focus on agriculture, specifically wheat farming in the region.

Today, Ellsworth County remains mainly dedicated to agriculture, with its economy primarily based on farming, ranching, and oil production. The county seat is Ellsworth, which has a claim to fame as the "wickedest cattle town in Kansas" during its cowtown days.
