Finney County is located in the southwestern part of Kansas and was officially established on March 23, 1883, named in honor of David W. Finney, a Kansas lieutenant governor. The county was initially a part of the larger Sequoyah County, but its borders were redrawn until it attained its current status. The region is known for its agricultural richness, characterized by thriving farms and ranches throughout the county.

The city of Garden City is the county seat of Finney County, and it played a significant role in the county's development. Garden City was founded by James R. Fulton, L.W. Dighton, and W.D. Fulton in 1878. They named it Garden City after the original Garden of Eden, believing the area's land was similarly fertile.

One notable historical event in Finney County was the arrival of the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway, which reached the county in 1879. This railroad connection contributed to the growth and development of the region by enabling the transport of agricultural products and boosting trade.

A fun fact about Finney County is that it is home to the world's largest outdoor concrete municipal swimming pool. Located in Garden City, "The Big Pool" covers approximately 100,000 square feet and can hold over 2 million gallons of water. The pool was constructed in 1922 and continues to be a popular attraction for residents and visitors alike.
