Franklin County is located in eastern Kansas and was officially established in 1855, named after one of the founding fathers and statesman, Benjamin Franklin. The county covers an area of 578 square miles and is home to the beautiful city of Ottawa, which serves as the county seat.

Originally inhabited by various Native American tribes, white settlers began to arrive in this region in the early 19th century, following the westward expansion of the United States. The county experienced significant growth due to the passage of the Kansas-Nebraska Act in 1854, which opened up the region for settlement and resulted in the influx of new residents. The arrival of the railroad in the 1860s further accelerated the growth of Franklin County and attracted people seeking economic opportunities.

Throughout its history, Franklin County has seen several notable historical events. The Battle of the Marais des Cygnes, part of the larger conflict known as "Bleeding Kansas," took place in the county in 1858. The battle was an armed conflict between pro-slavery and abolitionist forces, leading up to the American Civil War. Franklin County also housed Camp Chippewa in 1857, a meeting place for anti-slavery Free-Staters.

A fun fact about Franklin County is that it is the birthplace of the famous cyclist and racer, Arthur Rush Cheney. Born in Ottawa, Kansas, in 1879, Cheney was considered one of the top American athletes in the early 20th century, earning numerous titles and records in cycling and racing.
