Geary County is located in the northeastern part of the great state of Kansas. The county was originally established on August 30, 1855, as Davis County, named in honor of Jefferson Davis, the United States Secretary of War at the time. Following the outbreak of the Civil War, local sentiment turned against the Confederacy, and in 1889, the county was renamed Geary County, after John White Geary, an early governor (1857-1859) of Kansas Territory, who later went on to become Pennsylvania's 16th governor.

The county seat and largest city of Geary County is Junction City, which was founded in 1858. Fort Riley, a United States Army installation, is also located on part of Geary County's land. The fort was established in 1853 to protect settlers and travelers along the Oregon and Santa Fe trails. It played a crucial role in the Western expansion and the Indian Wars in the mid-19th century.

A fun fact about Geary County is that there is a 70-foot tall limestone statue called the "Atomic Cannon" located in its boundaries. The canon, officially called the M65, was developed in the 1950s as a part of the United States' arsenal during the Cold War. It was capable of shooting a nuclear warhead up to 20 miles. The Atomic Cannon was decommissioned in the 1960s, and one of the eight remaining cannons can be found on display in the county, providing visitors a unique insight into the arms race of that era.
