Gove County is located in the Great Plains region of the state of Kansas, within the United States. Established on March 5, 1868, the county was named in honor of Grenville L. Gove, a member of the 11th Kansas Volunteer Regiment who died during the American Civil War. The county's current seat is Gove City, which was officially designated in 1885 after it was moved from the original location in Buffalo Park.

The area now known as Gove County was initially inhabited by various Native American tribes, most notably the Cheyenne and Arapaho. European settlers started making their way into the region in the early-to-mid 19th century, attracted by the opportunities to grow crops and raise livestock. The Kansas Pacific Railway played a significant role in the development of Gove County, arriving in 1867 and providing the necessary transportation infrastructure to support the growing communities.

Agriculture has always been a critical part of Gove County's economy, with the primary crops being wheat, corn, sorghum, and alfalfa. Livestock farming, particularly raising cattle, is also an essential aspect of the local economy.

One fun fact about Gove County is that it is home to Castle Rock, a unique geological formation that is estimated to be over 80 million years old. This natural landmark, located near the town of Quinter, was formed by erosion and features large chalk pinnacles rising majestically from the plains. Castle Rock is a popular tourist destination and serves as a symbol of the natural beauty found throughout Gove County and the state of Kansas.
