Greeley County, located in the Great State of Kansas, was established on March 1, 1873, and named in honor of Horace Greeley, a famous American newspaper editor, statesman, and founding editor of the New-York Tribune. Greeley was widely known for the phrase "Go West, young man," which encouraged the westward expansion of the United States. The county's current seat and most populous city is Tribune, established in 1886, four years before its incorporation in 1890.

Greeley County is one of the smallest counties in Kansas in terms of population, and it sits in the High Plains region of the state. The county is notable for its agricultural activity, which predominantly involves the cultivation of wheat, corn, and sorghum, as well as livestock operations.

In 2007, Greeley County consolidated its city and county governments, making it the first and only county in Kansas with a unified government system. This consolidation aimed to improve the efficiency of government services and reduce operating costs, providing an example for other rural counties facing economic challenges or declining populations. This unique aspect of Greeley County sets it apart from other counties in Kansas and the United States as a whole.
