Harper County is located in the southern region of the great state of Kansas. It was established on February 26, 1867, and later organized on August 20, 1873. The county was named in honor of Sergeant Marion Harper of the 2nd Kansas Cavalry, who died of wounds suffered during the American Civil War.

The early settlement of the area began in the 1870s with the influx of cattle ranchers and farmers attracted by the fertile land and available resources. One of the first settlements in Harper County was Harper City, founded in 1877. Later, more communities were created as the population grew.

The economy of Harper County was predominantly based on agriculture, with wheat being the primary crop. The farming industry was greatly aided by the construction of the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway during the late 19th century, which enabled the farm products to be quickly transported to markets.

As for education, the first schools in Harper County were established during the 1870s, with the establishment of more schools as the population continued to grow.

One fun fact about Harper County is that it's home to the popular Anthony Downs and Harper County Fair, an annual event that features horse racing, rodeos, carnival rides, and various entertainment acts. This event attracts visitors from all over the region and serves as an important local cultural celebration.
