Harvey County is located in south-central Kansas and was established in 1872. The county was named in honor of James M. Harvey, a Captain in the Union Army during the Civil War, and the 5th Governor of Kansas from 1869 to 1873.

The area that would become Harvey County was originally inhabited by various Native American tribes before the arrival of European settlers in the mid-1800s. The county developed rapidly over the next few decades with the expansion of the railroad and the influx of settlers seeking opportunities in agriculture and manufacturing.

Newton, the largest city in Harvey County, was founded in 1871 as a railroad junction by the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway. The city became a hub for cattle drives coming from Texas along the Chisholm Trail. In the late 1800s, the railway industry played a significant role in shaping the economy and growth of the county.

Major industries in Harvey County have included milling, agriculture, and meatpacking. Today, the county has a diverse economic base, with significant employment in manufacturing, education, health care, and retail sectors.

A fun fact about Harvey County is that it was the site of the historic Chisholm Trail, a major cattle-driving route from Texas to Kansas from 1867 to 1884. Thousands of longhorn cattle were driven through the county to railheads to be shipped to eastern markets, and the cattle trade played an important role in the local economy at that time.
