Haskell County is located in southwestern Kansas and was officially established on March 5, 1887. It was named in honor of Dudley Haskell, a member of Congress who contributed greatly to the development of the region.

The first settlers arrived in the area in the 1870s, attracted by the prospect of free land through the Homestead Act. Haskell County experienced a population boom after the construction of the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railroad which ran through the county in the late 19th century.

The county's economy has been primarily driven by agriculture, with wheat, corn, and sorghum being the main crops grown in the region. In addition to farming, cattle ranching has also played an important role in the local economy.

Fun Fact: Haskell County is believed to be the origin of the H1N1 influenza virus, also known as the "Spanish Flu," which caused a devastating pandemic in 1918. Researchers have traced the first outbreaks of the disease to the county, where it eventually spread to other parts of the United States and then worldwide, killing millions of people. Despite the outbreak's immense impact, Haskell County remains a vital agricultural community in Kansas to this day.
