Jefferson County is located in the northeastern part of the great state of Kansas. The county was founded on February 20, 1855, and was officially organized on September 23, 1858. It was named in honor of Thomas Jefferson, the third President of the United States and the primary author of the Declaration of Independence. The land that makes up Jefferson County was originally inhabited by various Native American tribes, including the Kanza, Delaware, and Otoe peoples.

The county has a rich history that was deeply influenced by events in the mid-19th century, particularly the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854, which allowed settlers to determine if their territory would allow slavery or not. This led to a rush of pro-slavery and abolitionist settlers into the Kansas Territory, ultimately resulting in a period of violence and conflict known as "Bleeding Kansas." As a result, Jefferson County was a battleground for these two factions during its early years.

The county seat, Oskaloosa, was founded in 1856, and served as an important center for the region during this time. The growth of railroads in the late 19th and early 20th centuries also contributed to the development of the county, connecting its various towns and cities to other parts of Kansas and the broader United States. Over time, agriculture became the primary economic driver in the county, with crops like corn, wheat, and soybeans dominating its landscape.

A fun fact about Jefferson County is that it is home to the Perry Lake Reservoir, a popular destination for fishing, boating, and other water-based recreational activities. The reservoir was completed in 1969 by the U.S Army Corps of Engineers to help with flood control, and has since become an important social and economic asset to the region.
