.Jewell County, Kansas, is located in the northern part of the state, established on February 26, 1867, and organized on July 14, 1870. It was named after Lieutenant Lewis R. Jewell, a Union soldier in the American Civil War who was killed in the battle of the Little Blue River on November 6, 1864. The county covers an area of 914 square miles and is bordered by Nebraska to the north and several other Kansas counties along its other sides.
European settlement in Jewell County began in the 1860s, with an influx of settlers in the 1870s driven by the promise of abundant land and opportunities offered by the Homestead Act of 1862. The county saw significant growth in population and economic development during this period, with agriculture being the primary source of livelihood and development.
The first railroad in Jewell County arrived in 1880, which was a commercial advantage that led to the growth of towns and the overall development of the county. The population of Jewell County peaked in 1910 with over 12,000 residents but has since experienced a gradual decline. As of 2020, the county's population was estimated to be around 2,900.
