Lane County is a small but historically rich county in the great state of Kansas. Situated in the western part of the state, it was officially established on March 11, 1873, and named in honor of James H. Lane, a Kansas Senator and Union General during the American Civil War. The county has its boundaries defined by the 38th parallel north and covers an area of 718 square miles.

In its early days, Lane County experienced a handful of homestead settlements, specifically in the 1880s, primarily attracted by the potential for agriculture. The population increased during this period, and the county seat, Dighton, was founded in 1885. The first county courthouse was built in 1887, which still stands today as a remarkable piece of history.

As an agricultural community, Lane County contributed significantly to the cultivation of wheat and other crops. During the 20th century, the county saw advancements in transportation and infrastructure, with railroads and highways connecting it to the broader Kansas region.

One fun fact about Lane County is that it is home to one of the largest underground water formations, called "The Great Ogallala Aquifer," which is a vast reservoir of water beneath the ground, extending for about 174,000 square miles across multiple states. This makes it an essential resource for water supply, irrigation, and agriculture in the region.
