Linn County is located in eastern Kansas and was officially established on August 25, 1855. It was named in honor of Lewis F. Linn, a US Senator from Missouri who advocated for the settlement of the Oregon Territory. Linn County covers an area of approximately 606 square miles and has an estimated population of around 9,600 residents as of 2021. The county seat is Mound City, and other major communities include Pleasanton, La Cygne, and Parker.

During the mid-1800s, the area that is now Linn County played a significant role in westward expansion, as it was part of the route of the Oregon and California trails. The county was also at the center of the Bleeding Kansas period, which was marked by violent conflict over whether the territory would enter the Union as a free or slave state. In 1863, the Confederates under General Sterling Price fought against Union forces during the Battle of Mine Creek, one of the largest cavalry battles of the Civil War.

Agriculture has been a significant part of Linn County's economy since its founding, with the production of corn, soybeans, wheat, and livestock playing important roles. Additionally, the natural resources of the region, such as coal, limestone, and gas deposits, have been significant contributors to the county's development.

Fun fact: Linn County is home to the Marais Des Cygnes National Wildlife Refuge, a major stop for migratory birds and other wildlife, providing habitat for various species, such as the endangered eastern massasauga rattlesnake. This refuge is an excellent destination for birdwatching, fishing, and wildlife observation, attracting nature enthusiasts from all over the country.
