Logan County is a county located in the Great Plains region of the U.S. state of Kansas. With a rich historical background, the county was originally established on March 1, 1881, and was named St. John County after then-Kansas Governor, John P. St. John. On February 24, 1887, the Kansas legislature changed the name of St. John County to Logan County in honor of John A. Logan, a Union General during the Civil War, and also an Illinois senator.

Before the establishment of the county, it was home to several Native American tribes, such as the Cheyenne, Arapaho, and the Kiowa. Gradually, settlers of European descent started to migrate to the region attracted by the potential for prosperous agriculture, cattle ranching, and the westward expansion of the United States.

A significant event that influenced the settlement of Logan County was the passage of the Homestead Act in 1862. This act provided a grant of 160 acres of public land to established settlers, eventually resulting in the rapid expansion of settlers into the area.

As a fun fact, Logan County has earned the nickname "Fossil Fish Capital of the World" due to the numerous shark teeth and other Cretaceous Period marine fossils found in and around the Smoky Hill River.
