McPherson County, located in central Kansas, was created on February 26, 1867, and named in honor of Union Civil War General James Birdseye McPherson. The county consists of a total area of 901 square miles, and its county seat and largest city is McPherson.

Prior to European settlers arriving in the region, the lands were inhabited by Native American tribes, primarily the Kansa and Osage people. It was not until the 1850s and 1860s that European settlers began to establish their presence in the region. The first settler in McPherson County was reportedly L.J. Johnson, who built a log cabin along the Smoky Hill River in 1855.

By the 1870s, the county saw significant growth and development after the arrival of Swedish Immigrants who took up 13,000 acres, forming the Lindsborg community. McPherson County continued to grow in population and economic activity, supported by developments in agriculture, like wheat farming, and the railroad, which connected McPherson to the broader region.

The county's economy saw an expansion in the 20th century with the discovery of oil and natural gas. This transformed its economic landscape, fostering the growth of its energy sector. It was also during the 20th century that McPherson County began to develop its reputation for higher education, becoming home to multiple higher education institutions, such as Central Christian College, McPherson College, and Bethany College.

Fun fact: Kansas's McPherson County is home to the McPherson Opera House, an iconic historical landmark built in 1888. The Opera House has hosted various past and modern performers and events, and it continues to be a significant cultural center in the area.
