Mitchell County is located in the northern part of the great state of Kansas. The county was established on February 26, 1867, and its name pays homage to William D. Mitchell, a Captain in the Union Army during the Civil War who was killed in action in 1863. The county is part of the Saline River Watershed, which contributes to the overall geographic features of the area.

Beloit, the county seat, was founded in 1872 and quickly became a hub for settlers due in part to the construction of the Central Branch Union Pacific Railroad that came through the town. Mitchell County experienced steady population growth throughout the latter half of the 19th century, primarily fueled by agriculture and the railroad industry. During the early 20th century, Mitchell County emerged as a major producer of limestone and gypsum, leading to an increase in related industries such as mining and the production of cement and plaster.

One fun fact about Mitchell County is that it is home to the "Garden of Eden," a unique sculpture park created by Samuel P. Dinsmoor, which can be found in Lucas, Kansas. Dinsmoor, a retired school teacher and Civil War veteran, began constructing the garden with its many sculptures in 1907, at the age of 64. The Garden of Eden features sculptures made of limestone mixed with cement, depicting various subjects, including biblical and political themes reflecting Dinsmoor's views on society. Visitors can explore this quirky attraction, which has become an iconic example of American folk art.
