Nemaha County is located in the northeastern part of the great state of Kansas. Established on August 25, 1855, it was one of the original 33 counties created by the Kansas Territorial Legislature. The county is named after the Nemaha River, which flows through the county, and the word "Nemaha" is believed to be derived from a Native American term meaning "sandy water".

In its early years of establishment, Nemaha County played a significant role in the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854 which dictated the terms of settlement and government for the territories, which led to Kansas being admitted to the Union as a free state. The county soon became an important hub of commerce and communication. Agricultural production, particularly of crops like corn, wheat, and soybeans, fueled the initial growth of Nemaha County, which remains a major driver of its economy today.

Turning to one fun fact about Nemaha County it's known for the "world's smallest and oldest consecutively meeting masonic lodge," which can be found in Centralia, Kansas. The lodge, known as Centralia Lodge No. 352, has been active since 1870 and was coined as the world's smallest due to its tiny floor space of roughly 620 square feet.
