Neosho County, located in southeastern Kansas, was officially established on August 30, 1855, as one of the first 33 counties formed by the Kansas Territorial Legislature. The county was named after the Neosho River, which runs through the area. The word "Neosho" is derived from the Osage Indian word meaning "clear water."

The region was initially inhabited by Native American tribes such as the Osage and the Cherokee. White settlers arrived in the mid-19th century, attracted by the fertile soil and the opportunity to establish homes and farms. Neosho County saw significant growth due to European immigration, particularly German, Irish, and Swedish settlers who helped shape the area's cultural landscape.

The county seat is located in Erie, while Chanute serves as the most populous city in the area. Chanute was formed in 1873 when the four small towns of New Chicago, Tioga, Chicago Junction, and Alliance merged to create a single, unified community named after the railroad engineer and aviation pioneer Octave Chanute.

Neosho County played an essential role in the development of the petroleum industry. In 1894, the first commercial oil well, known as the Brown Well, was drilled in the county, signifying the beginning of Kansas's oil boom. This ushered in a period of significant economic growth as several refineries were established in the area.

A fun fact about Neosho County is that Chanute is home to the Martin and Osa Johnson Safari Museum, which was built in honor of the husband-and-wife team of adventurers who explored and documented Africa and the South Pacific in the early 20th century. Their films and photographs are now housed in the museum, which also serves as a cultural center for the region.
