Ness County is located in the great state of Kansas, within the United States of America. The county was established on March 27, 1867, and officially organized on October 23, 1873. It was named after Bvt. Major General and Civil War veteran, Noah Van Buren Ness, who was well known for his courage in the Battle of Nashville.

The region was initially inhabited by various Native American tribes, including the Arapaho, Cheyenne, Comanche, and others, who relied on the rich buffalo herds for sustenance. In the mid-19th century, European-American settlers began to move westward, attracted to the land through the Homestead Act of 1862 which provided land at little to no cost.

Agriculture has always been the primary economic engine of Ness County, where settlers cultivated crops like wheat, corn, and sorghum along with livestock ranching. The discovery of oil and gas in the 1960s diversified Ness County's economy, and led to population growth as people sought work opportunities.

One interesting fact about Ness County is that it is home to the "Skyscraper of the Plains." This refers to the Ness County Bank Building, located in Ness City. Completed in 1890, this four-story limestone building features a distinctive Richardsonian Romanesque design and was considered the tallest building between Kansas City and Denver during its time. Today, the building is a historic landmark and an enduring symbol of the ambitious spirit of its founders.
