Ottawa County, situated in the great state of Kansas, has a rich history dating back to the mid-19th century. The county was established on February 27, 1860, and derived its name from the Ottawa Indian tribe who once inhabited the region. The county seat and largest city in Ottawa County is Minneapolis.

Originally, the region was inhabited by Native American tribes, including the Kansa (or Kaw) and Pawnee people, before being occupied by European settlers moving westward in the United States. The Oregon and California Trails, key routes for westward expansion in the 1800s, passed through nearby regions, leading to an increase in settlers to the area.

Despite the influx of European settlers, the tribes remained in Kansas until the U.S. Government forcibly removed them in the mid-1800s, as part of Indian Removal Policy. Many Native American tribes were forced onto reservations in Oklahoma or other western locations.

Ottawa County's economy relied heavily on agriculture, with farms and ranches producing a variety of crops and livestock. The region experienced growth in the 20th century as more settlers arrived in search of fertile land for agriculture. Today, Ottawa County remains a largely rural area, with a population of around 5,959 as of 2020.

Fun fact: A unique point of interest in Ottawa County is the Rock City Park, located just 3.6 miles south of Minneapolis. The park boasts a collection of around 200 large, mysterious rock formations known as "concretions," some reaching up to 27 feet in circumference, making it a fascinating destination for geological enthusiasts and tourists alike.
