Phillips County is located in the great state of Kansas and was officially established on February 26, 1867. It was named in honor of William Phillips, a free-state advocate, and politician who was tragically murdered in the cause of the abolition of slavery. The county is situated in the north-central part of the state and has a total area of approximately 895 square miles.

The early inhabitants of the area were Native American tribes, including the Kanza and Arapaho. However, the first European settlers began arriving in the mid-1800s, primarily from European countries like England, Germany, and Sweden. These settlers were attracted by the fertile land suitable for agriculture and the potential for new opportunities in the expanding American frontier.

The county seat and largest city in Phillips County is Phillipsburg, which was founded in 1872. The town was named after William Phillips and quickly became the hub of the region's activity and development. At the height of the railroad industry, Phillipsburg thrived, with the Chicago, Kansas and Nebraska Railway company constructing a route that passed through the town in the late 1880s.

Agriculture has always been a significant part of Phillips County's economy, with primary products such as wheat, corn, and sorghum. The county experienced a growth spurt in the 1920s and 1930s, thanks to the rise in wheat prices and an increase in agricultural productivity.

Now, for a fun fact: The geographic center of the 48 contiguous United States, also known as the Lebanon Geographic Center, is located just a short drive southeast of Phillips County, near the town of Lebanon in neighboring Smith County. This significant point attracts tourists and creates a sense of pride in the region, offering a symbolic connection to the rest of the country.
