Pratt County is located in the south-central part of the great state of Kansas. Established in 1873 and named after Caleb S. Pratt, a Civil War officer, it covers an area of approximately 736 square miles. The county seat and largest city is Pratt.

The early history of Pratt County is marked by Native American settlements, with the Kiowa, Comanche, and Apache tribes inhabiting the area until the 1860s. After the Civil War, westward expansion brought settlers and cattle ranchers to the area, rapidly transforming the natural environment. The railroad contributed significantly to Pratt County's development in the second half of the 19th century, attracting businesses and families to the region.

Pratt County's economy was originally based on agriculture and livestock production, and these industries remain central to its economic identity today. The area is known for producing wheat, corn, and cattle. However, the county has diversified its economy over time, with sectors such as oil and gas production, manufacturing, and healthcare also contributing to its growth.

One fun fact about Pratt County is that it is home to the Pratt Fish Hatchery, which is the largest state-run fish hatchery in Kansas. Built in 1932, the hatchery spans over 43 acres and plays a vital role in stocking Kansas's lakes and reservoirs with various fish species, including largemouth bass, channel catfish, and bluegill.
