Reno County, located in the great state of Kansas, was founded on February 26, 1867, and covers an area of approximately 1,255 square miles. It was named in honor of Major General Jesse Lee Reno, a Union officer who was killed during the American Civil War. Hutchinson, established in 1871, serves as the county seat, and is also the largest city in the county.

Reno County lies within the south-central part of Kansas and has its western border defined by the Arkansas River. The region was initially settled by European-American immigrants in the late 1800s, with its population expanding due to the construction of the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway, which connected the area to eastern markets.

Agriculture has always been a significant part of Reno County's history and economy, with wheat, corn, and soybeans as primary crops. Additionally, salt mining has been a crucial industry in the area. The discovery of the Carey Salt Mine in 1887 was a major factor in Hutchinson's growth, as it produced a substantial amount of rock salt, necessary for both food preservation and industrial uses.
