Rice County, located in the great state of Kansas, was founded on February 26, 1867. It is named in honor of Brigadier General Samuel A. Rice, a Union officer who was killed in the American Civil War during the Battle of Jenkins' Ferry, Arkansas, in 1864.

Spanning an area of 727 square miles, the county comprises an abundance of fertile agricultural land. The early settlers, primarily of German, Swedish, and Irish descent, established their homes and farms in the region during the late 19th century. The advent of the railroad system greatly contributed to the development and prosperity of Rice County, as new settlers were attracted to the area.

Agriculture, particularly the production of wheat and grain sorghum, has historically played a crucial role in the economy and livelihood of the county's residents. Over time, Rice County saw the establishment of several educational institutions, including the former Bethany College in 1881.

A fun fact about Rice County is that it is home to the Coronado Heights Park, a scenic hilltop park located approximately three miles north of Lindsborg, Kansas. This park is named after the legendary Spanish explorer Francisco Vzquez de Coronado, who was believed to have passed through the region in 1541 in search of the mythical Seven Cities of Gold.
