.Rush County is a rural county located in the state of Kansas in the United States. The county was established on February 26, 1867, and was named in honor of Captain Alexander Rush, a member of the 2nd Kansas Colored Infantry, who was killed during the American Civil War.
In the late 19th century, Rush County saw an influx of settlers as the great westward expansion took place. Agriculture quickly became the dominant industry in the region, which has continued through to the present day. While the population peaked in the early 20th century, it has been on a downward trend since the 1930s, with people moving to urban areas in search of job opportunities and amenities.
The county seat is the city of La Crosse, which was founded in 1876 along the Santa Fe Railroad by German-Russian immigrants. The county is known for its scenery and small-town charm, with attractions such as the Post Rock Museum and the Grassroots Art Center in La Crosse, as well as the Walnut Creek and Smoky Hill River valleys.
A fun fact about Rush County is the origin of the Barbed Wire Museum in the city of La Crosse. It was established in the 1970s to showcase the history and importance of barbed wire in the settlement of the American West. The museum collects, preserves, and interprets barbed wire, with more than 2,400 types of barbed wire, as well as related fencing tools and equipment.
