Seward County, located in the southwest corner of the great state of Kansas, was established on March 20, 1873. The county was named in honor of William H. Seward, a prominent American statesman who served as Secretary of State under Presidents Abraham Lincoln and Andrew Johnson. Seward played a crucial role in the purchase of Alaska from Russia in 1867, which came to be known as "Seward's Folly."

The region underwent significant growth in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Primarily an agricultural area, Seward County has thrived thanks to its fertile soil and suitable climate for farming, which led to an influx of settlers. The construction of the Southwestern Railroad also contributed to the county's development.

The city of Liberal, which serves as the county seat, was founded in 1888 by S.S. Rogers. He opened the area to settlers by offering free land, wells, and building materials. As a result, the city thrived and saw exponential growth over the years.

Fun fact: Seward County is home to the popular tourist attraction, the "Dorothy's House and Land of Oz." Fans of the classic 1939 movie, "The Wizard of Oz," can enjoy a re-creation of Dorothy's farmhouse and explore a charming exhibit called the "Land of Oz," which includes a yellow brick road and numerous character sculptures. This whimsical attraction offers visitors an opportunity to step into the beloved story and experience a piece of literary and cinematic history.
