Shawnee County is located in the northeastern part of Kansas, with its county seat in Topeka, which is also the state capital. Established on August 25, 1855, the county is named after the Shawnee Native American tribe who were relocated to the area in the 19th century.

The Oregon Trail, which played a major role in westward expansion during the mid-1800s, passed through Shawnee County. The California and Santa Fe Trails also intersected with the Oregon Trail in the region. These trails were essential to the economic growth and development of the area.

Topeka, the capital city of Kansas, became the epicenter of the Free-State movement during the violent period known as Bleeding Kansas (1854-1859) when clashes between anti-slavery and pro-slavery factions took place before the Civil War. The Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka case, which led to the desegregation of public schools in 1954, remains one of the most significant Supreme Court decisions in American history.

A fun fact about Shawnee County is that it is home to the Evel Knievel Museum, which showcases the life of the famous motorcycle stunt performer and houses the largest collection of his genuine performance leathers and other memorabilia.
