Sheridan County, located in the great state of Kansas, was established on March 20, 1873. It was named in honor of General Philip H. Sheridan, a Union Civil War officer who played a significant role in the Indian Wars on the Great Plains. The county is situated in the northwestern part of Kansas and covers an area of approximately 896 square miles.

In the late 1800s, Sheridan County witnessed an influx of settlers, coming primarily from eastern states, who were attracted by the prospect of free land available through the Homestead Act. Agriculture has played a major role in the county's history, with wheat farming being a predominant industry. Ranching, too, has been an essential aspect of the local economy.

Hoxie, the county seat, was originally named Kenneth and later changed to honor the town's founder, Hiram Hoxie, in 1886. The city experienced significant growth with the arrival of the Union Pacific Railway, which substituted the prairie wagon transport and facilitated the expansion of Hoxie and Sheridan County.

A fun fact about Sheridan County is that it is home to the Cottonwood Ranch State Historic Site, a preserved sheep ranch and historic limestone house from the late 1800s. The ranch provides a glimpse into the life and times of settlers who inhabited the northwestern region of Kansas during that period, thereby serving as a living testament to the county's rich heritage.
