Sherman County is located in the northwestern part of Kansas and was established on February 20, 1873. The county was named in honor of General William Tecumseh Sherman, a Union Army general during the American Civil War, known for his innovative tactics and strategic insights.

The first European-American settlers arrived in the county around 1871. Early inhabitants in the area included several Native American tribes such as the Cheyenne, Arapaho, Kiowa, and Comanche. The construction of the Union Pacific Railroad in the 1880s brought significant growth to the region, with the town of Goodland becoming an essential shipping point for both cattle and agricultural products.

The county is primarily an agricultural region, producing grain, corn, and livestock. Sherman County has diversified its economy over the years, with agriculture remaining the primary source of income, supplemented by energy production from wind farms and other industries.

A fun fact about Sherman County is that it is home to the Giant van Gogh Painting in Goodland, Kansas. The painting, which is an 80-foot-tall reproduction of Vincent van Gogh's "Sunflowers," is displayed on an enormous easel and is part of the local effort to promote art within the community. This massive easel and painting are considered the "World's Largest Easel" and have been attracting tourists since its installation in 2001.
