Smith County is located in the northern part of Kansas, United States. Established on February 26, 1867, it was named in honor of Major J. Nelson Smith, a Civil War hero from the 2nd Colorado Volunteer Infantry. The county has a rich history dating back to the early years of the American frontier.

In the 19th century, the area was inhabited by Native American tribes such as the Kanza, Arapaho, and Sioux. White settlers, attracted by the fertile land and the promise of the American dream, began moving into the region following the passage of the Kansas-Nebraska Act in 1854. Over time, more settlers arrived, and the county's population grew.

The first post office in Smith County was established in 1871, and the town of Smith Centre became the county seat in 1872. The growth of the county was aided by the construction of the Central Branch Union Pacific Railroad in 1877, spurring economic development and linking the region to the rest of the country.

Agriculture has played a significant role in shaping the history and economy of Smith County. With its fertile soil, the region became known for wheat, corn, alfalfa, and livestock production. This agricultural focus continues to shape the landscape and culture of the area today.

A fun fact about Smith County is that it is home to the "Geographical Center of the 48 Contiguous States." This landmark, located in the town of Lebanon, was designated by the U.S. National Geodetic Survey in 1918. The monument stands as an interesting attraction for visitors and is a testament to Smith County's unique place in the American geography.
