Stevens County is located in the southwestern region of the great state of Kansas. Established on March 6, 1873, and named in honor of Thaddeus Stevens, a lawyer, U.S. Representative from Pennsylvania, and a key figure in the nation's early Republican party, the county covers an area of approximately 728 square miles.

Originally part of the Indian territory, the lands for Stevens County were purchased by the United States through the Medicine Lodge Treaty in 1867. However, the county remained largely unsettled until the 1880s when the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway established a branch line, bringing new settlers to the area. Agriculture became the primary economic driver, with farmers cultivating crops such as wheat, corn, and sorghum.

The first post office in Stevens County was established in 1886 at the town of Hugoton, which later became the county seat. In the late 19th century, a region known as the "Hugoton Gas Area" was discovered, giving birth to natural gas and oil production in the county.

One fun fact about Stevens County is the historic connection to the so-called "Stevens County Gas War" which took place in the 1880s. This event witnessed rival drilling companies from Kansas and the "No Man's Land" (now Oklahoma) engaging in a violent conflict over gas and mineral rights in the area. The gas war eventually ended after intervention from the U.S. Supreme Court, which settled the dispute in favor of Kansas in 1890.
