Trego County, located in the great state of Kansas, was established on February 26, 1867, as part of the newly organized Kansas counties. Named after Edgar P. Trego, a captain in the Union Army during the American Civil War, the county covers an area of approximately 900 square miles. Its county seat, WaKeeney, was founded by James Keeney and Albert Warren in 1879 and is nicknamed "The Christmas City of the High Plains."

The region was primarily inhabited by Native American tribes such as the Cheyenne, Arapaho, and Kiowa before European settlers arrived. The Kansas Pacific Railroad played a significant role in the growth and development of Trego County, as it constructed lines through the area in 1867, promoting commerce and settlement. Agriculture and cattle farming have historically been the primary industries in the county.

A fun fact about Trego County is that it is home to the Trego County Historical Society Museum, located in WaKeeney, which offers a glimpse into the region's past through exhibits such as the original county jail, an authentic one-room schoolhouse, and a display of memorabilia from the early days of the Kansas Pacific Railroad.
