Wabaunsee County, in the great state of Kansas, was established on March 25, 1859, and named after Chief Wabaunsee (or "The Sun Rise") of the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation. This northeastern Kansas county has a rich history with the beautiful Flint Hills providing a scenic backdrop. Wabaunsee County encompasses nearly 800 square miles and has a population of around 7,000 residents.

The area was initially inhabited by the Kanza and Potawatomi Native American tribes. It was first explored by European settlers in the early 1800s. The opening of the Kansas Territory in 1854 attracted new settlers, including free-staters, pro-slavery proponents, and abolitionists. The resulting tension from these differing views laid the groundwork for what became known as "Bleeding Kansas," a series of violent clashes leading up to the Civil War.

During the Civil War, Wabaunsee County was home to a group of volunteers called the "Kansas Jayhawkers," who aided people trying to escape slavery. After the war, the region saw growth in agriculture and the expansion of the railroad. Many small towns, including Alma (the county seat), were established and thrived during this time.

One fun fact about Wabaunsee County is the Beecher Bible and Rifle Church, located in Wabaunsee, Kansas. The church gained its name from the rifles, known as "Beecher's Bibles," that were sent to the area by the famous abolitionist Henry Ward Beecher to help free-state settlers protect themselves in the turbulent period leading up to the Civil War. Today, the church stands as a testament to the region's rich and diverse history.
