Wilson County, situated in the great state of Kansas, has a rich historical background. The county was officially established on August 25, 1855, and was named in honor of Hiero T. Wilson, a prominent trader and politician. The county's geographic location in the southeastern part of Kansas put it in a prime spot where numerous indigenous tribes, settlers, and traders coexisted and interacted. The Osage and Cherokee tribes were among the Native American tribes that frequented the region.

With the advent of the railroad in the late 19th century, Wilson County witnessed significant growth, particularly in towns like Fredonia, which became the new county seat in 1865, and Neodesha, which was founded in 1870 following the establishment of a railway station. The development of railroads helped promote economic prosperity, connecting the county to larger metropolitan cities and providing opportunities for agricultural, industrial, and commercial expansion.

The discovery of oil and gas resources in the late 19th and early 20th century played a pivotal role in the growth of Wilson County. The start of production in these fields led to a mini boom, with Neodesha quickly becoming an industrial hub. In this period, several buildings and prestigious homes were built, showcasing architectural styles typical of the period.

One fun fact about Wilson County is that the first commercially drilled oil well in Kansas was located in Neodesha. The discovery in 1892 by William Mills and T.J. Norman marked Kansas's entry into the oil and gas industry, contributing to its development in later years. This momentous occasion is now commemorated by the Norman No. 1 Oil Well Museum located in Neodesha, which tells the story of Kansas's oil and gas industry history, particularly in Wilson County.
